Many personal possessions are very easily sold, gifted, donated, or otherwise disposed of. Three-year-old leased vehicles with high mileage are another story. Or so I thought.
I’ve been driving a 2011 Ford Fiesta for three years and have 10 months remaining on my lease. Rather than return the vehicle to Ford and pay a penalty of 10 x the monthly payment, I advertised it on LeaseBusters.com and found someone who needed a fuel-efficient car for about 10 months. After passing inspection by his mechanic and some runaround from Ford (you didn’t think they’d handle this seamlessly, did you?) we made the exchange this afternoon.
I think it’s safe to say this was a good deal for both of us. I got out of the last legal contract tying me to Toronto and Moishe got a car that fits his needs, at a price he can live with, with no commitment beyond 10 months.
The bonus is the fact that I would have been required to renew the plates for another year had I kept it for another day since today is my birthday and Ontario plates are issued on your birthday.
When we were exchanging personal information I realized that Moishe is the new lessee’s Hebrew name but his ID shows “Michael”. The fact that we share a pretty common name shouldn’t have been a huge surprise, but we also share the same birthday – today!
Happy birthday, Moishe, and thanks for the lift back to my old neighborhood where I’m visiting some old haunts for one last time.
