Kashgar, China

Not having had a bagel in months, I was pretty happy to come across something called ‘girde naan’ while wandering around the livestock market in Kashgar, a city China’s far western Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. They were fresh out of a wood-fired oven and most people were dunking them in bowls of steaming mutton broth. While not quite as good as a fresh Montreal bagel, they were much better than similar carb-overloads that I found on the streets of Istanbul. I’d give them a 7 out of 10.
